The last Efendi

– an exhibition by Abdalsalam Alhaj , April 9 – 12, 2026

“The Last Efendi” unfolds from a personal archive shaped by the ongoing war in Sudan. At its core is a notebook belonging to the artist’s late father, a Sudanese sailor who documented journeys across Africa, Asia, and Europe between the 1970s and 1990s. Through photography and immersive media, the work traces memory, loss, Sudan’s fading maritime presence, and an unstable generation.

Exhibition Opening: Thursday, April 9, 7pm with a listening session by Abdalsalam Alhaj at 8:30pm

Opening Hours during the following days: Friday, April 10 – Sunday, April 12, 2pm – 8pm

Supported by Behörde für Kultur und Medien Hamburg (Ministry for Culture and Media Hamburg).

About the artist:

“If you direct your gaze into the sea, you see only its surface. Beneath it runs a current that carries stories you cannot see. My late father’s life was such a current, silent, hidden, yet always pulling at the shore of my own.” (Artist Statement) – Abdalsalam Alhaj is a Sudanese artist working across image, film, and immersive media.
